Knowledge

P.T.F.E (Polytetrafluoroethylene) is a completely fluorinated polymer manufactured by free radical polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene. With a linear molecular structure of repeating –CF-CF2- units, P.T.F.E is a crystalline polymer with a melting point of about 621oF (327oC), density ranging from 2.13 to 2.19 g. P.T.F.E has exceptional resistance to chemicals, its dielectric constant is 2.1 which makes it an excellent electrical insulator. Its coefficient of friction is lower than almost any other material. It also has a high oxygen level and heat resistance.
Polytetrafluoroethylene (P.T.F.E) resin is in a class of paraffinic polymers that have some or all of the hydrogen replaced by fluoride. The original P.T.F.E resin was invented by DuPont in 1938 and called Teflon® (TEFLON IS A REGISTERED TRADEMARK OF DUPONT). While all Teflon® is P.T.F.E, not all P.T.F.E is Teflon®.
